Context

After the buyer has placed an order, the merchant sometimes needs to perform a preliminary check before initiating shipments or delivering services.

The second European Payment Services Directive (PSD2) has introduced a number of rules to provide a better framework for this management between orders and shipments.

The PSD2 has therefore established:

Interbank rules.
Time limits between the order/authentication and the authorization.
Delays between authorization and compensation.

Time limits between the authorization and the clearing (settlement).

The card limit should only be utilized if shipment or delivery of the service is about to be initiated.
In addition, in case of split (or multiple) shipments, the card limit must also be split.
This also makes it possible to manage the case where the order is only partially delivered. In this case, only the amount actually shipped is charged to the card.

The principle is simple.

When the buyer places an order, an authentication request is made and the card is verified.
Before each shipment or service delivery, the merchant triggers a request for payment of the associated amount.
If payment is accepted, the merchant initiates shipment or delivers the corresponding service.

This is known as payment upon shipment.
